The report doesn't break out how parents of school-age children answered compared with voters overall, so a claim that "parents are demanding AI rules" reaches further than this data supports. Some classroom AI is low-stakes support. The same report is candid about the limits here. A generative writing assistant a teacher uses to draft a rubric, an adaptive math app a student practices with, an automated essay scorer, a monitoring system marketed as a safety tool, and a placement algorithm that sorts students into course levels can all get labeled "AI" in the same press release. They carry different risks. The category a tool falls into should change what a parent expects to see in place around it, including human review of anything that affects a grade, placement, or discipline record.

What federal guidance on AI regulation in education does and doesn't do

Last year, the Department of Education sent a Dear Colleague Letter to grantees and future grantees explaining how they could use federal grant funds to support AI in education. The letter states that AI use is allowable under existing federal education programs as long as it complies with applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, and it emphasizes engaging stakeholders, especially parents, in decisions about adopting new technologies (U.S. Department of Education).

That guidance is aimed at grantees, the states, districts, and other organizations that receive federal education funding, not a single binding rule governing what any individual classroom must or must not do with AI. It confirms federal dollars may be spent on AI tools. It doesn't set out a checklist for how student data collected by those tools should be handled, who has to review an AI-influenced grade or placement before it affects a student, or how a tool should be tested for bias before a district buys it. Those specifics simply aren't in the letter.

The Department also proposed a new supplemental grant priority to advance AI in education, responding to a presidential executive order on AI education signed in April 2025. That proposal went through a 30-day public comment period that closed last year, after which the Department said it would finalize the priority through a Notice of Final Priorities used to shape future federal grant competitions (U.S. Department of Education). Research for this article did not turn up confirmation of whether that notice has since been published or what it ultimately says. Anyone tracking a grant tied to this priority should check the Federal Register or the Department's website directly for the current status rather than assume it's settled.

Together, federal guidance permits AI spending and asks grantees to involve parents, but it stops well short of a thorough, binding standard for how AI works inside a specific classroom. The decisions the survey's 77% are asking about, what data gets collected, who signs off before an AI flag affects a student, whether a tool has been checked for bias, aren't answered at the federal level. They're made, or left unmade, by whichever grantee, state, or district received the funding.

What the survey doesn't tell us

Even setting aside the parents-versus-voters distinction, the poll's design limits what it can support. It shows that 77% of voters want clear government standards for school technology instead of the current approach, but it doesn't ask, or at least the published report doesn't show, whether voters mean a ban on certain AI uses in classrooms, limits on daily screen time, restrictions on what student data a company can collect, permission for teachers to use AI while restricting student use, or a requirement that a human review any AI-influenced decision.

Those are five different policy outcomes, and a voter could support one without supporting the others. Reading "voters want AI rules" as a single instruction to lawmakers or school boards skips over which specific rule voters actually have in mind, because the survey didn't ask that question.

Questions to bring to your school or district

The most useful thing a parent can do with this survey is bring specific questions to the district, each tied to a risk rather than a general worry about "AI in schools":

  • Which AI tools are currently approved for classroom use at your child's school or grade level? This tells you what's actually in use, rather than what a marketing page or news story implies.
  • What student data do those tools collect, and how long is it retained? This is a privacy question, separate from any concern about instructional quality.
  • Can a student be required to use a specific AI tool, or is there an alternative? This matters if a family has concerns about a particular product.
  • Who reviews an AI-generated grade, placement, or discipline recommendation before it affects your child, and can that decision be appealed? This is the human-review question federal guidance doesn't answer for you.
  • How does a family raise a concern or request a correction if something seems wrong? This tells you whether a process exists at all.

A district's published technology, AI-use, or student-data-privacy policy, where one exists, is the place to check for these answers first. If no such policy is posted, or a question goes unanswered, ask directly whether a written policy exists and where families can review it.

For educators and school board members

The same five questions apply, but who answers them varies by district, since procurement and data-governance responsibilities aren't standardized the same way everywhere. Ask which office in your district handles technology procurement and student-data governance, and confirm whether that office has a written process for reviewing new AI tools against existing student-data-privacy rules before they reach a classroom. If no such process exists yet, that's a concrete item to raise at a school board meeting rather than leave to individual teacher discretion.

Where this leaves parents right now

The survey's clearest, best-supported finding is genuine cross-partisan demand for documented technology rules in schools, 77% in favor of standards versus 23% backing the status quo, but that finding describes attitudes toward technology broadly, not a dedicated measurement of AI specifically. Federal guidance issued last year permits AI spending and calls for engaging parents, but it leaves the technical details, data handling, human review, bias testing, to whichever grantee or district receives the funding.

Bring the five-question checklist above to your child's school this semester, ideally in writing, and ask which office keeps the answers on file. If the school can't answer, ask whether a written policy exists at all and where a family can review it. That's a more concrete outcome than any single survey figure, and it's the one that actually affects your child's classroom.
