This guide walks through how to use AI for school without cheating on assignments, violating your school's academic integrity policy, or undermining your own learning. What they share is this: you need explicit instructor permission before using AI on graded work, and you need to actually understand what that permission covers.
Oregon State University's student guidance puts it as two questions students must answer yes to before using AI on any assignment: Has your instructor provided expectations for how AI can be used on this assignment? And do you actually understand what those expectations allow? If either answer is no, Oregon State's guidance is unambiguous don't use it.
The stakes are real. University of Cincinnati guidance classifies generating full answers, essays, code, or problem solutions with AI and submitting them as your own as academic misconduct. Oregon State treats using AI to complete an assignment without prior instructor authorization as cheating, and copying AI output without citation as plagiarism. Daemen University's syllabus policy templates a resource designed to help faculty set course-level rules, not a single campus-wide policy describe consequences ranging from a grade penalty to removal from a program or the institution.
One thing students often overlook: even uses that seem harmless can be prohibited. Daemen's zero-tolerance syllabus template explicitly bans AI for brainstorming, outlining, note-taking, and editing, treating any AI involvement as academic dishonesty. That's one of seven template options Daemen provides. Another template permits AI brainstorming with full disclosure. What your instructor has stated in writing is what governs not what the task feels like.
Before you open any AI tool: your pre-use checklist
Run through these five questions before using AI on any school task. If you can't answer yes to all of them, clarify with your instructor first.
1. Is AI permitted for this specific assignment? Check your syllabus for an AI statement. Minnesota State's student guide describes three instructor approaches: Prohibited (no AI, all work must be your own), Prescribed (AI allowed for specific tasks only, with explanation required), and Open (AI may be used freely with transparency about what it produced). If your syllabus has no AI statement, email your instructor before the assignment is due. Not after you've already used it.
2. Is this a support use or a substitution use? Ask yourself: am I still producing the ideas, the argument, and the written content? Using AI to help you think is the lower-risk category across the policies reviewed here. Using AI to do the thinking and submitting the result is what UC, Oregon State, and Daemen all treat as misconduct.
3. Am I using an approved tool? Minnesota State distinguishes between tools approved for institutional use such as Microsoft Copilot and Zoom AI Companion and unapproved ones. Some tools are restricted because they record or store private information without consent. Confirm which tools your institution permits before use.
4. Am I uploading anything I shouldn't? Minnesota State advises students never to enter into unapproved AI tools: grades or coursework, anything about classmates, personal identifying information, or materials created by others. That includes your instructor's assignment prompts and course content. Uploading instructor-created materials into a consumer AI tool raises both privacy and intellectual property concerns.
5. Will I need to disclose or cite this use? Many courses that permit AI require transparency about how it was used. Oregon State states that whenever AI use is allowed, students must cite it. Build that expectation in before you start the disclosure section later in this guide covers exactly how.
What if my syllabus doesn't mention AI?
This is the most common situation students face, and it's worth walking through carefully rather than guessing.
Your instructor didn't mention AI at all. Oregon State is direct on this: if there's no statement and you can't get clarification before the deadline, don't use AI. UC's guidance puts it similarly when in doubt, assume AI isn't allowed on graded work unless your instructor says otherwise. Send a specific question before you start: "Is it acceptable to use AI for [specific task] on this assignment, and if so, do I need to cite or disclose it?" Keep the response.
The assignment is a quiz, take-home exam, lab report, or reflection essay. UC lists using AI on take-home tests or quizzes unless clearly allowed as a typical prohibited use. Lab reports and reflection essays frequently appear in the same category. These assignment types are generally the highest-risk category for AI use. Assume AI is not permitted unless your instructor has explicitly said otherwise.
The assignment is a discussion post. UC lists letting AI write a discussion post among its examples of prohibited uses. Discussion posts are designed to reflect your thinking in response to course material. Using AI to draft the post is the same problem as using it to write an essay.
The tool is Grammarly, Copilot, or ChatGPT. Tool identity matters separately from task type. Minnesota State distinguishes between institutionally approved tools which come with privacy protections and data agreements and consumer tools. The same grammar-check task may be acceptable in an approved tool and a potential policy issue in an unapproved one, depending on your institution's rules. Grammarly is common enough that many instructors have a specific position on it; check your syllabus or ask directly.
When the rules for a specific assignment are unclear, ask rather than assume.

Idea generation and planning
1. Brainstorm possible topics, then make your own selection. Ask AI to generate a range of possible angles on a subject, then evaluate the list yourself and choose one that fits the assignment. UC and Oregon State both list idea generation and topic brainstorming as potentially acceptable uses when instructors allow. Daemen's pre-writing syllabus template permits AI brainstorming and outlining while requiring that all submitted content be written by the student; some courses also require documentation of the prompts you used.
Where students go wrong: asking AI to choose the topic, or letting AI's framing shape the argument before engaging with the material themselves.
2. Generate a draft outline structure, then build your own argument into it. Ask for a possible organizational structure, then rewrite it to reflect your actual thesis and evidence. MUSC's guiding framework published this month and explicitly described as a pedagogical guide, not a policy statement describes a category where AI may assist with high-level brainstorming or outline generation when instructors designate it, while requiring that all final content be original. You still supply every claim, every piece of evidence, and every sentence.
Comprehension and concept clarification
3. Ask AI to explain a concept from class in plain language. If a lecture definition didn't land or a textbook explanation is circular, AI can rephrase it. UC lists asking AI to explain a concept in simpler terms as a potentially acceptable use, and Oregon State includes clarification of difficult concepts as a potential course use.
One caution worth taking seriously: Minnesota State warns explicitly that AI can fabricate facts and generate fake sources. Treat any AI explanation as a starting point. Verify the concept against your textbook, course notes, or instructor before accepting it. Never cite an AI explanation as a source in an academic paper.
4. Use AI to help clarify what an assignment prompt is asking. Oregon State lists explaining assignment prompts as a potential acceptable use. This is a comprehension move, not a content shortcut you're clarifying the task, not completing it. Before pasting any assignment prompt into an AI tool, check whether your institution permits uploading instructor-created content. That material belongs to the instructor under intellectual property principles, even if you have a copy of it.
Practice and self-testing
5. Generate practice questions and quiz yourself before an exam. Ask AI to produce sample questions on a topic you're studying, then answer them without looking at any AI output. UC and Oregon State both list practice and exam question simulation as potentially acceptable uses. Research reviewed by Brookings earlier this year found that students using generative AI without structured guidance show "limited reflection" on material. Self-quizzing, which requires active recall, is a stronger use than passively reading AI summaries.
Check your answers against course materials, not additional AI output. The goal is to surface gaps in your understanding, not to collect AI-generated answers to memorize.
6. Ask AI to use Socratic questioning while you study a concept. Instead of asking AI for an explanation, ask it to question you about a topic, then answer those questions yourself. Brookings identifies Socratic questioning where students identify their own gaps through guided questions rather than receiving direct answers as a core feature of effective AI tutoring approaches. Nothing gets submitted here. It's private, low-stakes practice that surfaces exactly what you don't yet understand.

7. Use AI to help debug code or understand an algorithm, not to write the submitted code. AI can explain what a piece of code does, identify what might be causing an error, or walk through the logic of an algorithm step by step. Oregon State specifically lists coding assistance including debugging, explaining algorithms, and generating sample code for learning as a potential course use. The key phrase is "for learning." Having AI produce the final code you submit is the same category of problem as having it write your essay.
Revision and formatting
8. After writing your own draft, use AI to check grammar, flag unclear sentences, and suggest formatting. UC lists getting suggestions for clarity and structure then revising in your own words as potentially acceptable. Oregon State includes editing, proofreading, and formatting help as potential course uses. MUSC's framework describes a category where AI may be used for grammar checks and formatting while requiring that all core work be completed without AI assistance; documentation of each AI interaction may be required.
Where students go wrong: pasting AI's revised version of a paragraph directly back into the paper. The revision has to come from your own rewrite. Also, tools like Grammarly may fall under your school's AI policy. Confirm with your instructor.
How to recognize when you've gone too far
These signals, drawn from UC's guidance, indicate a use has crossed from support into substitution:
- You couldn't explain your work out loud without looking at the AI output.
- The writing doesn't sound like you and you made only light edits to what AI produced.
- You copied AI-generated content with minimal changes.
- The assignment explicitly prohibited AI tools and you used one anyway.
- AI made the core decisions the argument, the selection, the analysis and you assembled the result.
If any of those describe your situation, the safer choice is to redo the work. Submitting work you can't explain and defend is not worth the academic integrity risk.
How to disclose AI use when required
When your instructor permits AI and your course requires disclosure, document and cite it. Transparency is part of responsible use.
Oregon State states that AI-generated content should be cited similarly to journals and books, with the company listed as author. APA example from their guidance: OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat. MLA format uses the company name, tool, version, and URL. Always check your syllabus for a preferred citation format, since instructors vary.
For AI-assisted editing, Minnesota State provides a sample disclosure statement: "During the preparation of this work, the author used [tool name] to enhance clarity and coherence. After using this tool, the author reviewed and edited the content as needed and takes full responsibility for the content of the publication." Use this only in courses where AI is permitted it's not a workaround for prohibited assignments.
Keep notes on your process as you go: which tool you used, what prompt you entered, and how you modified the output. If your work is ever questioned, a record of how you actually worked is better protection than hoping your writing passes a detection tool. Minnesota State notes that AI detection tools are unreliable and may incorrectly flag writing from nonnative English speakers. Process documentation, not detection avoidance, is the right goal.
Before your next assignment
Open the syllabus for every course where you might use AI and check four things:
- Is there an AI statement, and what does it permit or prohibit?
- Which tools has your institution approved?
- Are any assignments this term explicitly AI-prohibited exams, labs, reflections?
- What disclosure or citation format does your instructor require?
Those four checks take five minutes. If the syllabus is silent on AI, send your instructor a specific question before the assignment is due and keep the response.
