This isn't a sudden switch. Fully digital vs. hybrid digital: what's different

A practical consequence follows from that setup: students still need to move between a screen and a paper booklet during the exam, something a fully digital exam never requires.
Hybrid formats exist for a specific reason. College Board designed them for subjects that require graphic or symbolic notation, which is harder to reproduce cleanly through a keyboard, the 2025 newsroom report noted. That's part of why a subject like AP Music Theory, which involves handwritten notation, stays hybrid in 2027 while more text-based subjects move to fully digital.
Subject-level details vary even within those two categories. World language exams handle audio recording and submission through Bluebood itself, rather than a separate recording tool, the Coordinator's Manual notes. AP Art and Design's digital portfolio submission deadline also moves to 11:59 p.m. ET in 2027, an hour later than the previous 8 p.m. ET cutoff, per the same manual.
Why College Board is moving the rest of AP testing online
The scale of the shift so far helps explain why 2027 is the next step rather than the last one. In 2024, College Board delivered 650,000 AP Exams digitally, and more than 75% of students and administrators rated the digital testing experience the same as or better than paper testing, according to College Board's newsroom.

The January 22 deadline: who it actually affects
The Coordinator's Manual lists January 22, 2027, as the SSD accommodations request deadline for the 2027 exam cycle, according to the manual. That date matters most for a specific group of students, not for everyone with an existing accommodation.
Students who already have approved College Board SSD accommodations generally don't need to submit a new request solely because an exam is digital, AP Central's accommodations FAQ explains. Students already approved for extended time, breaks, or an accommodation requiring an accessible exam format automatically receive the corresponding digital exam setup, per the same FAQ. The January 22 deadline is most relevant for new requests, changes to an existing accommodation, and one accommodation type in particular: if a student needs a human reader or human writer/scribe for a digital AP Exam, their SSD coordinator must submit that specific request in SSD Online by January 22, 2027, according to the FAQ.

What to verify with your AP coordinator
