If you are an American woman of Polish descent, you may be surprised to learn that there is a number of scholarships available for people with Polish heritage. This is because Polish cultural associations in many large cities have raised money to fund higher education for their members and their children. When you begin your scholarship search, first get in touch with your local Polish association if you are not already. They will be able to tell you if you meet their scholarship qualifications. While you are looking for financial aid options, consider funds for Polish-American women and first-generation American scholarships, if you are part of those groups.
Scholarships for Students of Polish Descent
Numerous scholarships for students of Polish descent are sponsored by Polish cultural associations and councils, including the Polish Scholarship Fund and the Polish American Arts Association (PAAA).
Each year, the Polish Scholarship Fund provides 10 scholarships worth $1,000 each to help students of Polish descent pay for college, university or trade school. Students must have lived in Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga or Oswego counties and have been accepted to an accredited school as a full-time student. The Polish Scholarship Fund chooses its winners based on a variety of factors, including academic accomplishments and participation in Polish community activities.
The Polish American Arts Association awards $5,000 scholarships to Polish-American college students from Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Involvement in the Polish community is required, and students must be able to demonstrate Polish genetic descent in their application.
Kosciuszko Foundation Tuition Scholarships help American students of Polish descent pay for their graduate studies at colleges and universities in the United States. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $7,000 and are awarded annually.
The Kosciuszko Foundation also facilitates a few other scholarships for Americans of Polish descent. Take a look at their website for more information and details on how to apply.
Scholarships for Polish-American Women
The Massachusetts Federation of Polish Women’s Clubs provides scholarships for Polish-American women. Scholarships are $1,250 and should be used to continue ongoing education at the university level.
Polish-American women can also apply to most other scholarships.
First-Generation American Scholarships
Ascend Educational Fund grants scholarships to students graduating from a New York City high school. To apply, students must be the children of immigrants or immigrants themselves. See the Ascend Educational Fund website for more information.
Other scholarship funds offer awards for students in specific locations. The Achievement Scholarship for Refugees and Immigrants is available for residents of Wake County North Carolina. The Ann Biggs/Thelma Salazar Scholarship for First-Generation Immigrants aids students at the University of Texas at San Antonio. More first-generation American scholarships depend on the student’s ethnicity or country of origin.
