Many people who are ordinarily shy or nervous around others somehow find it easy to photograph them. Photographers create art or capture moments of news and history through their lenses. Adults interested in photography can earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in photography at several colleges in North Carolina.

Appalachian State: Art -- Or Business

Students at Appalachian State University in Boone have a choice if they choose to major in photography. They may choose to major in commercial photography, which would earn them a bachelor's degree in science. Students must take courses in business as well as photography editing, production and digital photography. Students may also choose to major in studio arts, with a concentration in photography, for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. If students choose to go this route, they would take some drawing and foundational art classes, while art history and studio art electives would focus on photography.

East Carolina University

East Carolina University offers a photography concentration in their Bachelor of Fine Arts program. Students take courses in both digital and analog photography, learn about photographic equipment, layout, the wet process, lighting and other technical effects. In addition, students learn about the history of camera design, the history of photos and the role of photography within cultures. Students learn to take studio portraits as well as quick digital photos that may end up in a digital newspaper format. For students interested in pursuing a master's degree, East Carolina offers a master's degree in fine arts as well, with a student-designed concentration in photography.
