Imagi Raises .5M for AI Vibe Coding Education: K-12 Guide
Imagi, a K-12 AI literacy platform headquartered in New York, raised $4.5 million in a seed round last week to expand supervised AI coding tools into more classrooms, according to a company announcement. The round brings Imagi's total funding to $5.5 million and was led by Brighteye Ventures and Day One Capital, with backing from musician Will.i.am, TechCrunch reported.
The money is meant to answer a question a lot of schools are already sitting with: what happens when the AI tools students use informally at home get built into a supervised classroom lesson instead. Imagi's answer is a partnership with Lovable, the platform that lets people build software by describing it in plain language, wrapped in teacher-created lessons and content screening.
Whether that version of vibe coding for K-12 students produces skills that outlast the lesson, or mainly teaches kids to phrase a request clearly, is the open question the announcements don't fully settle. What's confirmed is specific: funding, investors, district reach claimed by the company, and two classroom examples. What isn't documented in the available coverage is how students are assessed on that work.
The deal, and the gap it's meant to close
Imagi was founded in 2018 by CEO Dora Palfi and CTO Beatrice Ionascu, who started the company after a user-research project at Stockholm's KTH Royal Institute of Technology, according to Imagi. The company built its curriculum around coding and basic computer skills for K-12 students, then doubled down on the U.S. K-12 market in 2024 and added AI literacy to that curriculum last year, TechCrunch reported.
Imagi partnered with Lovable last November, giving teachers a way to build lessons while students get controlled, guardrail-monitored access to vibe coding, per the company. The company says its platform now operates in more than 100 U.S. school districts, including Hawaii's Department of Education, and has reached more than 700,000 students across 140 countries. Imagi also reports 30x year-over-year user growth and 3x annual recurring revenue growth. OpenAI contributed $1 million in credits, which Palfi said supports free trials and freemium access to the Imagi and Lovable tool, according to TechCrunch.
Imagi's announcement points to a specific mismatch driving demand for an AI coding education platform like this one: 84% of high school students use large language models for schoolwork, while 45% of school administrators say access to generative AI tools is still restricted in their classrooms, according to Imagi, which cites College Board research. The new capital is earmarked for expanding into more districts, district sales, hiring, and product development, along with a new platform the company said is planned for August, per Imagi. Inside the Imagi and Lovable classroom partnership
The partnership announced last November lets a teacher build a lesson inside Imagi's curriculum, then give students controlled access so they can learn vibe coding, building software by describing what they want, within guardrails the platform sets, TechCrunch reported.
Palfi has described two specific projects that came out of it. A teacher built an app that translated classroom materials into the 15 languages spoken by students in the room, according to TechAmerica.ai. Separately, a student built a website to promote his lawn-mowing business, linking it to his calendar so customers could book time directly, Palfi said, per TechCrunch.
Palfi frames the goal as moving students from AI consumers to AI builders. "Most kids already use AI, but we need to teach children to build with AI rather than just passively consume it," she said, according to TechAmerica.ai.
What the announcement, TechCrunch's reporting, and TechAmerica.ai's coverage confirm: teacher-created lessons, controlled student access, screened prompts and responses, and the two projects above. Citing a security researcher, the BBC reported earlier this year that apps built on Orchids were vulnerable to cyberattacks, according to that same TechCrunch report. None of that involves Imagi or Lovable directly, but it shows that a screened prompt doesn't automatically mean a secure finished product.
Free access right now is supported in part by OpenAI's $1 million credit contribution, which Palfi said funds the free trials and freemium access the company offers, per TechCrunch. What happens to pricing and access once the OpenAI credits are used up. Families and teachers evaluating a pilot lesson can raise those same three points directly with a district's curriculum office or technology staff before treating early classroom use as proof of what a student has actually learned.
