Although scholarships limited to the dependents of Texas veterans are not plentiful, there are a few. Some of these come in the form of tuition waivers that allow veterans' dependents in Texas to pay a reduced tuition rate or no tuition at all. Some of these scholarships and tuition waivers are only available to the dependents of veterans who have been disabled or killed in action.
MOAA Heart of Texas Chapter
The Heart of Texas Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America offers annual scholarship money to the immediate family of Texas veterans. These scholarships are valued at $7,500, as of April 2011, and are available to the dependents of both living and deceased veterans. To be eligible, applicants must be residents of central Texas. Approximately five scholarships are awarded each year. The annual deadline for application is April 30.
American Legion Auxiliary Department of Texas
The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Texas offers scholarship money to the children and grandchildren of Texas veterans each year. To be eligible, an applicant's parent or grandparent must have served in one of the following conflicts: WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama or the First Gulf War. This scholarship is valued at $500, as of April 2011, and is awarded on the basis of an applicant's financial need, character and citizenship. The annual deadline for application is April 1.
Hazlewood Exemption
The Texas state government offers tuition assistance to veterans' children through the Hazlewood Exemption. This program is available to children whose parent was a resident of Texas upon entry into the United States military or to the child of a Texas National Guard or Texas Air National Guard veteran who was killed in service-related action. This tuition waiver may only be applied at public colleges and universities within the state. Recipients of this exemption are not required to pay any tuition or fees for attending school.
Texas Waivers for Out-of-State Military
The Texas state government also provides waivers for out-of-state military survivors attending Texas public colleges and universities. To be eligible, an applicant must have moved to Texas within 60 days of the parent's service-related death. This tuition waiver allows an applicant to pay the in-state rate even though he is not yet a resident of Texas.
