There is not much that feels worse than having a hangover. Between the spinning head, nausea, vomiting, and just feeling like garbage, anyone who has ever suffered this fate wants nothing short of quick relief. While you won’t instantly feel better, there are some things you can do to help relieve the symptoms when you’ve had one, or a few too many.
Stay hydrated. Drinking alcohol dehydrates your body, so it is important that you consume plenty of non-alcoholic fluids. This is something you can and should do in between drinks as well. Drink plenty of water or an electrolyte replacing sports drink such as Gatorade for hydration.
Eat foods high in complex carbohydrates, such as bread or crackers. Consumption of fruits, fruit juices or other foods high in fructose may help reduce the intensity of a hangover as well.
Buffered aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen can help relieve headache associated with hangover, but should be used cautiously, as they may be harsh to the stomach or cause gastrointestinal problems. Acetaminophen should be avoided, as it may contribute to liver damage.
Take B-complex vitamins and vitamin C. They help in metabolizing and breaking down the alcohol in your body. Calcium carbonate antacid tablets, such as TUMS, may also help to neutralize the acid in your stomach.
Overall, you’ll need to rest and allow your body time to recover. It will take time for the effects of alcohol to completely wear off.
