Binghamton University, which is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, is one of the top 90 colleges in the nation. It’s a public research university that opened in 1946. It was originally called Triple Cities College and used for the local veterans who had served in World War II. Today, it sits on 930 acres of land in Binghamton, New York. The town of Binghamton is home to professional baseball and hockey teams, a symphony orchestra, an opera company and fine dining. On campus, there is a 190-acre nature preserve with forest and wetlands. The college is considered a public Ivy because it provides an Ivy education at a public cost. Its motto is “From breadth through depth to perspective.” Notable alumni include actor William Baldwin, sportswriter Tony Kornheiser, professor Deborah Tannen, comedian Paul Reiser, singer Ingrid Michaelson and comic book artist Art Spiegelman. The university’s color is Pantone 342 (a shade of green), its mascot is Baxter the Bearcat and its sports affiliation is NCAA Division I America East. Varsity teams at Binghamton include men’s basketball, lacrosse, golf and cross country, and women’s basketball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball.
