The University of Rhode Island, a public, land-grant, sea-grant university in Kingston, Rhode Island, is one of the top 160 institutions of higher learning in the United States. It was founded in 1888 as an agricultural school, and by 1892 it was called the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Today, it is located on more than 1,200 acres of land in a rural setting. The school has additional campuses in Providence, West Greenwich and Narragansett. Its motto is “Think Big. We Do.” Notable alumni include journalist Christiane Amanpour, retired United States Navy Officer Robert Ballard, Former United States National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, basketball player Lamar Odom, retired United States Army General Leon LaPorte, news anchor John King, former CEO of the Vornado Realty Trust Board of Trustees Michael Fascitelli, football player Steve Furness, magician Mat Franco, CEO of Wolters Kluwer Nancy McKinstry and model Leila Goldkuhl. The school’s colors are blue and metallic gold, its mascot is Rhody the Ram and its teams are nicknamed the Rams. Its sports affiliations are NCAA Division I, Atlantic 10 Conference and Colonial Athletic Association. Varsity sports offered by the university include men’s football, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and track and field, and women’s basketball, cross country, rowing, golf, swimming and diving, tennis and track and field.

Kingston is a village and a census-designated place in the town of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, United States, and the site of the main campus of the University of Rhode Island.
