West Virginia University, a public space-grant and land-grant university located in Morgantown, West Virginia, is one of the top 205 institutions of higher education in the United States. The West Virginia Legislature established the university through the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act in 1867. Originally called the Agricultural College of West Virginia, today, the school sits on more than 900 acres of land. Its motto is “To faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge.” Notable alumni include basketball player Jerry West, actor Don Knotts, basketball coach Bob Huggins, CEO of Cisco Systems John Chambers, CEO of XFL Oliver Luck, mathematician Katherine Johnson, basketball player Hot Rod Hundley and actor Chris Sarandon. The school’s colors are old gold and blue, its mascot is The Mountaineer and its teams are nicknamed the Mountaineers. Its sports affiliations are NCAA Division I – Big 12 and ACHA Division 1 (CHMA), and there are 17 different varsity teams. Varsity sports offered by West Virginia University include men’s baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, swimming and diving and wrestling, and women’s basketball, cross country, volleyball, soccer, rowing and gymnastics. Club sports offered include quidditch, ice hockey, powerlifting, racquetball, swing dance, figure skating and competitive cheer.
Morgantown is a city in and the county seat of Monongalia County, West Virginia, situated along the banks of the Monongahela River. It is known as the home of West Virginia University and the Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit system.
