Do you think you can only get financial aid to go to college in the United States? You might not know the whole story. While most accredited colleges and universities in the United States are FAFSA approved schools, some universities in other countries are approved as well. These schools have FAFSA school codes just like schools in the U.S., so you will be able to get a study loan for an overseas university to attend them. You can participate in short or long study abroad programs. Just make sure you do a school code search first to see if your overseas dream school qualifies.

Study Abroad With Financial Aid

If you’re already receiving financial aid, meaning you have already filled out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you may be able to use that money to participate in a study abroad program through your university. The easiest way to do this is to apply for programs your university already runs. It's likely your school’s financial aid office is used to processing aid for for these programs, and it won’t be difficult to get a study loan for an overseas university.

Finding Different Programs

If you want to participate in a different program that is not offered by your school, you may have to do little more work. This may include finding a study loan for an overseas university. Once you know the list of potential schools you wish to attend, you will need to do a school code search to locate the FAFSA school codes. If they do not have FAFSA school codes, you may not be able to get federal funding.

How to Do a School Code Search

Visit the FAFSA website and find the page titled “Federal School Code Search.” There should be several drop-down options to choose from on this page. In addition to seeing if a school is eligible for federal financial aid, you can also compare details about schools by starting on this page. Some of the details you can find through this search are total tuition and fees, graduation rates and more. Remember that these numbers may vary by year. For a better estimate, look at more than one year of data for each school. The college school codes pages are only helpful for locating domestic schools.

For international schools, you will have to consult the listing on the international schools page. This list includes schools in many countries, such as England, France, Germany and Canada.
