The Episcopal Church is a Christian sect with more than two million active members, many of whom live in the U.S. but also in other parts of North and South America and Europe. The church offers 11 seminary schools in the U.S. for those who want to become ministers, lay leaders or who just want to embark on theological study.
The Berkeley Divinity School at Yale in New Haven, Connecticut, offers seminary students the vast resources of an Ivy League institution. The school was formed in 1733 after Anglo-Irish bishop and philosopher George Berkeley bequeathed his library of theological books to Yale. Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, offers Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in theological studies, and Doctor of Ministry degrees. The school is affiliated with Harvard Divinity School and its students can cross-register for Harvard classes.
Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, offers a diploma in Anglican studies, a Master of Arts in religion, a Master of Divinity, a Master of Sacred Theology and Doctor of Ministry degrees. Founded in 1938, the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia, is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education for the quality of its programs. About 8 percent of students at the General Theological Seminary in New York City are minorities and many students, staff and faculty there are gay or lesbian. The median age of General Theological Seminary students is between 30 and 40.
Bexley Hall at Bexley, Ohio, and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, share the same board of directors and the same website even though one school lies near Columbus, Ohio, and the other is near Chicago. The seminaries offer three-year Master's of Divinity programs for those seeking to become Episcopal priests, with courses in the scriptures, church history and pastoral theology. Nashotah House at Nashotah, Wisconsin, was formed in 1841 by missionaries seeking to convert Native Americans. The school offers master's and doctoral degrees in ministry.
South and West
The Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California, is the only Episcopal seminary on the West Coast. It had 18 teachers for 86 enrollees during the 2012 to 2013 school year. Students at the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas, can take advantage of resources at several nearby schools, including the University of Texas. The school offers a Master of Arts in religion. The School of Theology at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, offers a variety of master's and doctoral degrees, including a Doctor of Ministry in liturgy and Doctor of Ministry in preaching.
