Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) can become registered nurses (RNs) by enrolling in an LPN-to-RN degree program before sitting for the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) to gain licensing for practice. In the state of Georgia, these programs are usually offered in a variety of educational institutions, including community colleges, technical schools and four-year universities.

Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College

An agricultural educational college located in a small town in south Georgia, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College offers a one-year LPN-to-RN program for an associate's degree in nursing (ADN) that requires 65 credits instead of the standard 76 credits. The program, however, is not only for LPNs, but licensed paramedics, surgical technicians, and respiratory therapists as well.

Athens Technical College

Named after the city in which it is located, Athens Technical College has an ADN curriculum of 108 credits, 56 of which are core nursing courses. LPNs with at least two years of experience in the field can apply for the accelerated option, which will enable them to finish the program in one year instead of two years. Students who get a 70th-percentile score on the challenge exam for the Nursing Care of Adult Clients I course are rewarded with an eight-credit waiver and are exempt from taking Fundamentals of Nursing.

Armstrong Atlantic State University

A four-year institution located in the Georgian port city of Savannah, Armstrong Atlantic State University offers a four-year degree--the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN)--instead of an associate's degree. In the advanced placement track, LPN students can take challenge examinations to waive up to 22 credits in an undergraduate program that requires at least 127 credits for graduation.
