Medical billers are responsible for making sure that healthcare facilities are paid for their services. In addition to managing payment files, they also handle insurance claims, and must be fluent in the coding systems used to enter the specifics of billing information into the computer systems used by healthcare facilities. Many medical billing programs exist in New York City, but not all are accredited.
New York Medical Career Training Center
New York Medical Career Training Center, with locations in Manhattan and Flushing, is accredited by The Council on Occupational Education and licensed through the New York State Department of Education. Medical billing at this school is a 60-hour program taught through computerized simulations. The program focuses on billing and coding procedures and patient file management procedures. It also teaches students how to produce and correct various types of medical insurance forms.
New Life Business Institute
The medical billing program at the Jamaica, Queens-based New Life Business Institute is accredited by the Accreditation Bureau for Health Education Schools and licensed by the New York State Education Department, Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision. This 325-hour program combines regular classroom instruction with hands-on, practical training. When you complete this program you will be prepared to work in billing offices in doctor's offices, nursing homes, hospitals and outsource billing companies. You will also learn CPT-4 and ICD-9 coding as well as Medical Terminology, Managed Care and Electronic Billing.
Sanford-Brown is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools and three of its campuses are in the state of New York. The Certificate in Medical Billing and Coding Program at their New York City location takes about 15 months to complete and covers all areas of billing and coding procedures, including reimbursement systems and data abstracting, and culminates in a "supervised clinical externship at a medical facility."
The Manhattan Institute
The Manhattan Institute is located in midtown Manhattan, and is accredited by The Council on Occupational Education and licensed by the New York State Education Department-Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision. This school offers a four week program in medical billing, with classes on either weekdays or weekends, which the school states will prepare you for a job in any type of health care office, including laboratories, drug-treatment centers, HMOs, pharmacies, optical stores and surgical supply centers.
