University of Mary Washington is a public liberal arts and sciences school in Fredericksburg, Virginia, which is an hour away from Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia. The school was founded in 1908 and named for Former U.S. President George Washington’s mother Mary Ball Washington. The school sits on 324 acres, and its motto is “Pro Deo Domo Patria” or “For God, home, and country.” Since 2006, eight faculty members at University of Mary Washington have received Fulbright Awards. Notable alumni include attorney and author Elizabeth Edwards, philanthropist Shin Fujiyama, actress Desiree Marie Velez, author Maggie Stiefvater, U.S. Air Force General Teresa A. H. Djuric and politician Mark Cole. The school’s colors are navy blue and gray, the mascot is the Eagle and its sporting affiliation is NCAA Division III. The Eagles have received the CAC All-Sports Award 12 times. Varsity sports offered at the college include men’s baseball, basketball, golf, cross country and lacrosse, and women’s tennis, softball, track and field, basketball and volleyball. There are 16 club sports available to choose from as well. One-third of the study body studies abroad prior to graduation, and the school offers 121 programs in 56 countries around the world.
