Union University, a private Christian university located in Jackson, Tennessee, is one of the top 160 institutions of higher education in the United States. It started as Jackson Male Academy in 1823, and moved from downtown to North Jackson in 1975. Today, the school sits on nearly 300 acres of land in an urban setting. Its motto is “Religio et Eruditio” or “Service and learning.” Notable alumni include Pastor Steve Gaines, Former President of Rhodes College William E. Troutt, Former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Howell Edmunds Jackson, musicologist Joshua F. Drake, basketball player Josephine Owino, baseball player Luis Ortiz and businessman and politician Chad McMahan. The school’s colors are cardinal and cream, its mascot is Buster and its teams are nicknamed the Bulldogs. Its sports affiliation is NCAA Division II – Gulf South, and there are 11 varsity teams. Varsity sports offered by Union University include men’s cross country, golf, soccer, baseball and basketball, and women’s cross country, golf, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball. The women’s basketball teams won five NAIA national championships, and the school has national NCCAA titles in softball, men’s soccer and volleyball.

Jackson is a city in and the county seat of Madison County, Tennessee. Located 70 miles east of Memphis, it is a regional center of trade for West Tennessee.
