Southern Methodist University, located in the metropolitan Dallas, Texas area, is a private research university and one of the top 70 schools in the U.S. The Methodist Episcopal Church, South founded the school in 1911, and it officially opened its doors in 1915. Its campus size is 237 acres, and is home to the George W. Bush Presidential Center, the George W. Bush Policy Institute and offices for the George W. Bush Foundation. Meadows Museum, located on the SMU campus, hosts the largest collection of Spanish art outside of Spain. The school also has nine libraries, and the largest private collection of research materials in the Southwest region. The school’s motto is “The truth will make you free.” Notable alumni include Former U.S. First Lady Laura Bush, football player Doak Walker, Kourtney Kardashian, actress Kathy Bates, producer Aaron Spelling and American playwright Beth Henley. The school’s colors are SMU red and SMU blue, and its mascot is Peruna, a Shetland pony. Its sporting affiliation is NCAA Division I – AAC, and varsity sports offered include men’s basketball, cross country, equestrian, baseball and football, and women’s basketball, equestrian, tennis and soccer. The teams are called the Mustangs.
