Northwestern University is one of the top 20 universities in the U.S., and a private research university. Established in 1851, it spans across dozens of colleges and three campuses. The main campus is 240 acres in Evanston, Illinois, there are 25 acres in Chicago and another campus located in Doha, Qatar. Notable alumni include Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, TV host Stephen Colbert, actors Zach Braff, Zooey Deschanel and Julia Louis-Dreyfus and writer George R.R. Martin. Northwestern is a founding member of the Big Ten Conference, and is the only private university that participates. The school has 11 women’s and 8 men’s NCAA Division I sports teams, including baseball, basketball, football, soccer, golf, wrestling and field hockey. The mascot is Willie the Wildcat, and the school’s official colors are white and purple. Its motto, “Quaecumque Sunt Vera,” means “Whatsoever things are true” and is derived from the New Testament book of Philippians. It is religiously affiliated with the United Methodist Church. One of the quirks of Northwestern is its large rock called Rock, where students go to leave messages for others to see. The school is known for its theater department in the School of Communication, where many famous actors studied.
