Dubai has made a substantial investment in education. Areas such a Knowledge Village and Dubai Academic City contain many higher education institutions. In addition, Dubai has a number of medical colleges where students can focus on different fields.
Gulf Medical University
Started in 2008, Golf Medical University focuses on three areas: medical education, health care and research. The university is composed of different colleges such as the College of Medicine, College of Dentistry and College of Allied Health Sciences. The university accepts men and women of all nationalities and religions. Cost and duration of degrees varies depending on degree. For example, a doctor of pharmacy degree takes five years and, at the time of publication, costs 90 thousand United Arab Emirates dirham ($24,500) per year. Admission involves a review of academic records, an invitation to a 45-minute interview, which is held in English, and approval by the provost. The university organizes international and regional conferences and publishes the "Gulf Medical University Heath Journal."
Dubai Medical College
Founded on Islamic ideals, Dubai Medical College is for women only and promotes Islamic teachings. In addition to your course of studies, one hour a week is required for study of the Islamic faith and laws of Shariah. The college has intensive studies, so you can complete preclinical studies in two years rather than the usual three. Class size for this phase of the program is 24 students. Clinical studies take two years and eight months with classes composed of four to eight students. Annual tuition is 100,000 AED ($27,225) at the time of publication.
RAK Medical & Health Sciences University
With staff from 20 different countries, RAK Medical & Health Science University has 967 students from 41 countries. The university offers bachelor’s degrees in areas such as medicine, surgery, dental surgery, pharmacy and nursing. In addition, the university has master’s programs in pharmacy and nursing. Tuition varies according to program. A bachelor’s in pharmacy, which takes four years, costs 20,000 AED ($3,811) per semester at the time of publication.
Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dubai
Founded in 2005, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dubai, offers master’s degrees in health care management, quality and safety in health care management and leadership in health professions education. The master’s programs can be completed on a part-time basis, including classroom and distance education. The programs take two years full-time but can be completed in up to five years. The programs are designed for health care professional such as doctors, nurses, allied health care professionals and health insurers. The college is open to males and females of any religious background. Total tuition for master’s degrees is 105,000 AED ($28,585) at the time of publication.
