Dating back to 1879. the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical schools in North Carolina . Established in 1879, UNC at Chapel Hill is consistently ranked at the top of all primary medical schools, according "U.S. News & World Report." In fact, UNC at Chapel Hill was ranked the top school in the U.S. for primary care in 2018. In 2018, UNC at Chapel Hill had about 833 students. In addition to the M.D. program, the school also offers exceptional Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs in science concentrations, as well as in occupational science, speech and hearing sciences and human movement science.

Wake Forest University Medical School

Wake Forest University founded its medical school in 1902. Wake is one of the medical universities in North Carolina that offers an array of health care programs. For instance, the School of Medicine offers Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree programs, Master of Medical Science (M.M.S.) degree programs for aspiring physicians’ assistants, Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) degree programs in anesthesia nursing and certification programs in medical laboratory science and medical ultrasound.
