Illinois State University, a public university in Normal, Illinois, is one of the top 165 institutions of higher learning in the United States. It was started in 1857 as a school for educating teachers. It officially became Illinois State University in 1968. Today, the school sits on 1,000 acres of land in an urban setting. The school’s library, Milner Library, contains over 1.5 million volumes, and its quad, which includes the Fell Arboretum, won a Tree Campus USA award. Illinois State University’s motto is “Gladly We Learn and Teach.” Notable alumni include actress Laurie Metcalf, actress Jane Lynch, basketball player Doug Collins, actor John Malkovich, actor Sean Hayes, actor Gary Cole, actor and comedian Craig Robinson, actor Tom Irwin, singer-songwriter Suzy Bogguss and singer Michelle Williams. The school’s colors are red and white, its mascot is Reggie Redbird and its teams are called the Redbirds. Its sports affiliation is NCAA Division I FCS. Varsity sports offered by the university include men’s baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track and field, and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, swimming and diving, softball, soccer, tennis and volleyball. Club sports include baseball, badminton, fencing, fishing, golf, ice hockey and handball.

Normal is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town's population was 52,497. Normal is the smaller of two principal municipalities of the Bloomington–Normal metropolitan area, and Illinois' seventh most populous community outside the Chicago metropolitan area.
