East Carolina University, a public, sea-grant research university located in Greenville, North Carolina, is one of the top 195 institutions of higher education in the United States. The North Carolina General Assembly established East Carolina Teachers Training School in 1907. In 1967, the school was renamed East Carolina University. Today, the school sits on 530 acres of land in an urban setting. Its motto is “Servire” or “Service.” Notable alumni include actress Sandra Bullock, baseball player Mike Trout, DJ Carter Cruise, CEO of WWE Vince McMahon, football coach Ruffin McNeill, golfer Harold Varner III, actress Jennifer Bartels and football player Chris Johnson. The school’s colors are purple and gold, its mascot is PeeDee the Pirate and its teams are nicknamed the Pirates. Its sports affiliation is NCAA Division I (FBS) – The American, and there are 20 varsity teams. Varsity sports offered by East Carolina University include men’s football, baseball, basketball, golf, swimming and diving, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field, and women’s basketball, golf, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, lacrosse, softball and soccer. Club sports include badminton, baseball, boxing, equestrian, ice hockey, scuba and tennis.
