The City University of New York (CUNY) has 23 colleges in its system; each New York borough has, at minimum, one CUNY school. These schools offer various technical degrees, community college programs, graduate degrees and post-graduate certificates. These offerings include a wide variety of counseling degrees, at both the technical and graduate levels.
School Counseling Degrees and Programs
With a focus on diversity, Brooklyn College offers a master of science in school counseling and an advanced certificate in school counseling. At the CUNY Graduate Center, students learn research methodology in the school's doctoral program in educational psychology. At Hunter College, students learn how to nurture and develop students in urban schools through its master of science in school counseling program. Lehman College offers a master of science in counselor education/school counseling at the K-12 level. Queens College prepares candidates for a career in school or agency counseling with a master of science in school counseling or education counseling.
Mental Health Counseling Degrees and Programs
Baruch College focuses on general mental health counseling for a wide variety of applications in its master of arts in mental health counseling program. Brooklyn College gives students a grounding in clinical practices for adults and families in its master of arts in psychology and mental health counseling programs. The school also offers graduates an advanced certificate in grief counseling, along with the opportunity to work with other graduate students in areas of grief and trauma counseling (see reference 4) . The City College of New York provides candidates with training in prevention and community support in the master of science in mental health counseling program. John Jay College of Criminal Justice focuses on coursework to prepare candidates to work in detention centers and police facilities with a master of arts in forensics of mental health counseling. Kingsborough Community College prepares students to transfer to a four-year university and focus on counseling with an associate's degree in community health.
Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation Degrees and Programs
The New York City College of Technology offers an 18-month program to prepare post-graduate students for professional certification as alcohol and substance abuse counselors. Kingsborough Community College prepares students to transfer to a four-year university and study counseling with an associate of science in chemical dependency counseling or a certificate in alcohol and substance abuse counseling.
Psychology Degrees and Programs
At the College of Staten Island students can earn a bachelor of science, bachelor of arts or minor in psychology. Student with a GPA of 3.5 or higher can write an honors thesis to obtain an honors notation on their diploma. Hunter College offers a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and has a career opportunity in research and education (CORE) program, as well as an honors program for undergraduates. Medgar Evars College offers a bachelor of arts in psychology for students interested in studying human development and proceeding on to graduate work in counseling. York College trains students with a strong base in community support and diversity in its bachelor of arts and minor programs in psychology.
