Clarkson University, a private research university located in Potsdam, New York, is one of the top 125 institutions of higher learning in the United States. After Potsdam-based entrepreneur Thomas S. Clarkson died, his sisters wanted to create a memorial for him. They founded Clarkson University in 1896 as the Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial School of Technology. Today, it sits on 640 acres of land in the small town of Potsdam, which only has a population of 17,000. The school’s motto is “A Workman That Needeth Not to be Ashamed.” Notable alumni include the founder of Adams Golf Barney Adams, hockey player Mark Borowiecki, music promoter Harvey Glatt, Major League Baseball player Jack Phillips, co-founders of the Blue Oyster Cult Albert Bouchard and Donald Roeser and actor M. Emmet Walsh. The school’s colors are green and gold, its mascot is the Golden Knight and its teams are nicknamed the Golden Knights. Its sports affiliations are NCAA Division I – ECAC Hockey and NCAA Division III – Liberty League. There are 20 varsity men’s and women’s teams. The men’s sports include football, soccer, basketball, swimming and hockey, and women’s hockey, softball, volleyball, lacrosse, cross country and rugby.
