The Society of Jesus founded Boston College in 1863, and now it is one of the top 40 schools in the U.S. It is one of 28 Jesuit universities and colleges in the nation. Located in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, this private research university sits on 340 acres of land. The university’s motto is “Ever to Excel.” Notable alumni include Former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, actress Amy Poehler, basketball player Jared Dudley, U.S. Senator Ed Markey, actor Leonard Nimoy, U.S. Congressman Mike Capuano and football linebacker Luke Kuechly. The school’s colors are maroon and gold and its mascot is Baldwin the Eagle. Its sporting affiliations are NCAA Division I – ACC and Hockey East. The varsity sports teams, which are all called the Eagles, include men’s basketball, baseball, football and ice hockey, and women’s sailing, volleyball, lacrosse and basketball. The ice hockey team has won five NCAA team national championships. Boston College is the most popular college on Instagram, with more than 73,000 followers, and Gasson Hall is the third most popular college building on the social media site.
