Most essays are arguments. They make compelling and persuasive statements to readers about why they should care about a particular subject or agree with the author. In order to make a strong argument in an essay, the author must be passionate about the subject and believe wholeheartedly in the argument she is making. There are various ways an author can make an argument stronger in an essay. All it takes is a little preparation and an open mind.

Step 1

Strengthen your argument with facts. Research the topic of your essay and use the appropriate facts that will make a strong argument. For instance, if you are writing an essay about how organic farming is better for the environment, then use relevant facts, such as farming practices, use of organic materials and the way they are used in the farming environment, to bolster your argument. Only use what is relevant to your topic.

Step 2

Verify that the facts you use come from reliable sources. Any facts or information from unreliable sources or information that has been debunked will sink any argument in an essay. Research the sources you will use for information. Is the source outdated? Has it been debunked by more reliable sources or updated due to new research or scientific discoveries? This is true for published works as well as information found on the Internet. What type of source are you using? Sources such as Wikipedia are not as reliable as the latest edition of an almanac or scientific journal since the content is user-generated and may not be verified.

Step 3

Use counterarguments to bolster your essay. Readers are not passive. They will question or disagree with you. Acknowledging the counterarguments your readers might have will allow you greater latitude in persuading your case to them. It gives the impression that you have done your research and that you are a trustworthy authority on the subject.

Step 4

Use an authoritative tone in your writing. The thesis statement should always be that, a statement, not a question. Present your arguments clearly and assertively. Keep your audience in mind. Do not condescend to them, but always present facts and explain your arguments in such a way that you will inform and engage them.

Warning

Don’t plagiarize. While plagiarism is wrong in any form of writing, it can also hurt your argument if you have proven yourself to be unreliable to your reader. An essayist tells a reader that everything he has written can be trusted, which is extremely important to win over readers of an argumentative essay.
